A Tail in Need Foster Guide

Focus Areas

Volunteer Education • Performance Support • Resource Development • Community Engagement

The Challenge

Animal rescue organizations often rely on volunteer foster caregivers to provide temporary homes for vulnerable animals. While these volunteers are passionate about helping, many are caring for foster animals for the first time and may feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities, procedures, and decision-making involved.

The organization needed a resource that would provide foster caregivers with clear guidance, practical tools, and easily accessible information to support successful foster placements and improve outcomes for animals in care.

My Approach

I developed a comprehensive Foster Guide designed to serve as both an onboarding resource and an ongoing reference tool for foster caregivers.

The guide was organized to provide clear, actionable information on common fostering responsibilities, animal care practices, organizational procedures, and frequently asked questions. Special attention was given to making information easy to locate and understand, helping volunteers build confidence while reducing uncertainty during the fostering process.

By applying instructional design principles and information architecture strategies, the guide transformed a large amount of organizational knowledge into a user-friendly resource that supports volunteers throughout their fostering journey.

Resource Showcase

The Foster Guide was developed to support both new and experienced foster caregivers by providing clear, practical guidance throughout the fostering journey. Originally created as a traditional reference manual, the resource was redesigned and updated to improve usability, navigation, and accessibility while preserving critical organizational knowledge.

The guide combines volunteer onboarding, animal care education, health and safety information, behavioral guidance, and organizational procedures into a single resource that caregivers can reference throughout the fostering process.

The examples below highlight key sections of the guide, including foster onboarding resources, animal care guidance, behavioral support materials, health and safety information, and volunteer reference tools.
